Please introduce yourself and your current role. What led you to pursue a career in sustainability, and how has it shaped your professional journey?
My name is Afra Alsuwaidi, and I work as a Senior Sustainability Officer at Dubai Municipality, combining environmental management with urban planning. Growing up, I have always felt a strong connection to the environment and the communities around me. Seeing how urban growth affects natural habitats inspired me to pursue a career in sustainability. I studied Environmental Health Science and now I focus on sustainable urban planning, which allowed me to bring practical, hands on solutions to projects that support both the environment and resilient cities. Sustainability has shaped my journey by giving me the chance to create real impact and contribute to a greener future.
Which Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) most closely aligns with your work, and how does it influence your organisation’s sustainability strategy or initiatives?
SDG 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities, aligns closely with my work. It guides how I integrate environmental considerations in cities ensuring growth is inclusive, resource efficient, and climate resilient. This goal inspires initiatives such as green infrastructure, better waste management, and youth engagement in sustainability projects. Every project I work on focuses on meeting today’s needs while protecting resources and quality of life for future generations.

What innovations or unique practices have you introduced in your daily life that have helped reduce your environmental footprint?
I carry a reusable water bottle and reusable bags, and I give them to friends and family to make it easier for everyone to adopt the habit. At home, I reduce waste by recycling materials whenever possible. These simple practices make sustainability part of my daily routine and inspire others to take small, meaningful steps.
In what ways do you balance sustainability with your personal or professional goals?
I balance sustainability by making it part of everything I do. At work, I make sure projects have clear environmental benefits while achieving their goals efficiently. At home, I focus on practical actions that fit easily into my daily routine. Seeing sustainability as part of life rather than an extra task keeps me motivated and allows me to make consistent, meaningful contributions.
Could you share a particularly challenging moment you faced while pursuing sustainability and how you overcame it?
One of the biggest challenges I faced was encouraging people to see sustainability as a priority in everyday decisions. Often, even small actions can feel overwhelming or easy to overlook. I overcame this by focusing on simple, practical steps and showing how they make a real difference. I also worked on creating awareness through workshops and discussions which helped others understand the impact of their choices. Seeing people start to adopt these practices and feel empowered has been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey.

Which environmental or social causes are you most passionate about, and how do you actively support or advocate for them through your role or beyond work?
I am passionate about youth engagement in environmental action, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience. I support initiatives that empower young people to participate in sustainability projects through workshops, mentorship, and hands-on experiences.
How do you involve your friends, family, or community in your sustainability efforts?
I involve my community by sharing practical ways to live sustainably. I encourage friends and family to reduce waste, use resources wisely, and take simple steps that collectively make a difference. I also engage youth through workshops and activities that inspire participation and awareness. Seeing others take action motivates me and strengthens the impact we can create together.

Looking ahead, what sustainability goals or focus areas are you prioritising next, either for your organisation or within your professional development?
Looking ahead, I am focusing on achieving sustainability goals that align with the UAE’s 2050 Carbon Neutrality Strategy. This includes integrating circular economy practices, and creating opportunities for youth to participate in sustainability initiatives. I am also developing my skills in environmental data analysis and climate resilience planning to support projects that reduce carbon emissions and enhance resource efficiency. My goal is to contribute to a future where the UAE reaches its carbon neutrality targets while inspiring communities to take meaningful, lasting action.
