The United Arab Emirates is rapidly emerging as a regional and global leader in the fight against plastic pollution, driven by ambitious policies, innovative programs, and a strong vision for a sustainable future. The nation’s commitment is reflected in a series of bold initiatives designed to eliminate unnecessary plastic use, promote eco-friendly alternatives, and foster a culture of environmental responsibility.
Comprehensive Bans on Single-Use Plastics
A centerpiece of the UAE’s strategy is the phased ban on single-use plastics. Starting January 1, 2026, a nationwide ban will prohibit the import, production, and trade of single-use plastic products, including cups, lids, cutlery, food containers, and plates. This builds on earlier measures, such as the 2024 ban on plastic bags and the 2025 ban on various single-use items in Dubai, including bags, cutlery, straws, and food packaging.
These policies are supported by strict enforcement, public awareness campaigns, and collaboration with major retailers to provide reusable alternatives and encourage sustainable consumer habits.

Promotion of Sustainable Alternatives
To facilitate the transition away from single-use plastics, the UAE is actively promoting sustainable alternatives.
Biodegradable materials, reusable products, and innovative packaging solutions are being developed and adopted across the country. Initiatives like “Dubai Can” encourage residents to use refillable water bottles, supported by the installation of water stations throughout the city to reduce reliance on plastic bottles.
Dubai Can’s Refill For Life sustainability program has achieved significant environmental impact by preventing the use of more than 30 million single-use plastic water bottles (500ml) over three years of operation. Supporting Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan objectives, this initiative has provided over 15 million liters of drinking water via a network of 53 strategically located refill stations throughout the emirate.
Circular Economy and Recycling Initiatives
The UAE’s Circular Economy Policy plays a critical role in supporting plastic prevention efforts. It emphasizes sustainable resource use across sectors such as infrastructure, transportation, manufacturing, and food systems, with a strong focus on reducing plastic waste and expanding recycling.
Organisations like the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), established in 1991, have been pioneering recycling initiatives in the UAE since 1992, including comprehensive plastic collection campaigns alongside paper, glass, aluminum, and e-waste recycling programs.
Additionally, Dubai Municipality has launched ambitious initiatives such as collecting and recycling 3 million plastic packaging units, equivalent to 60 tons of PET plastic, demonstrating the government’s commitment to circular economy principles and plastic waste reduction.
Public Engagement and Education

Public outreach is a cornerstone of the UAE’s approach to plastic waste reduction. Abu Dhabi’s flagship “Mission to Zero” campaign, launched by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), represents an ambitious aspirational initiative targeting zero single-use plastic consumption, zero waste, zero carbon emissions, and zero impact on all Abu Dhabi species and habitats.
This multi-faceted outreach campaign strives to get all residents of Abu Dhabi to join in achieving the zero target of single-use plastic consumption, with concrete objectives including making Abu Dhabi government entities 100% free of single-use products, recovering 50% of single-use plastic bottles through an incentive-based scheme, and replacing 100% of single-use grocery plastic bags with multiple-use bags.
The campaign employs innovative engagement strategies, including large “Big Zero” installations for collecting single-use plastic bottles strategically placed across Abu Dhabi and educational initiatives like the “Pile It Up” challenge in collaboration with Abu Dhabi schools, recognizing that youth are crucial catalysts for environmental change.
Similarly, Dubai Municipality has launched comprehensive awareness initiatives, including the distribution of 100 smart plastic packaging containers to government and private educational institutions, establishing 17 collection centers for recyclable materials in populated areas, and setting up 10 specialized plastic packaging containers at beaches.
Authorities have launched extensive campaigns in schools, communities, and businesses to highlight the dangers of plastic pollution and the importance of alternatives. During Ramadan 2025, for example, Dubai Municipality specifically urged residents to avoid single-use plastic containers and tableware during iftar, offering practical tips for waste reduction.
The UAE’s plastic prevention initiatives are aligned with international efforts to combat plastic pollution and climate change, underscored by its hosting of major events like COP28. As global plastic consumption continues to rise, the UAE’s decisive actions set a powerful example for other nations seeking to balance economic growth with environmental stewardship.
