What is Earth Overshoot Day?
It’s the day each year when we’ve used more natural resources than the planet can renew in 12 months. From that day on, we are using up future resources and creating waste faster than nature can recover.
When is it in 2025?
In 2025, Earth Overshoot Day falls on July 24. That means in less than seven months, we will have used up Earth’s yearly supply of resources. For the rest of the year, we are borrowing from the future.
How is the date calculated?
It compares two things:
- Biocapacity – how much nature can produce and absorb in one year
- Ecological footprint – how much we take and waste in the same time
The earlier this date comes, the more pressure we are putting on the planet.
Why is it getting earlier each year?
Back in the 1970s, Overshoot Day came in December. In 2025, it’s in July. That shift shows just how fast our demand is growing and how unsustainable our lifestyles have become.
What happens when we overshoot?
Using more than nature can handle has serious consequences:
- Forests are cut down faster than they can regrow
- Soil becomes weaker from overuse
- Wildlife loses its habitat and disappears
- Carbon pollution rises, making the planet hotter
- Resources like water and food become harder to access
What about individual countries?
Every country has its own Overshoot Day. For example, Switzerland reaches it on May 7. If everyone lived like the Swiss, we would need almost three Earths.
The UAE’s Overshoot Day in 2025
In the UAE, Overshoot Day is on March 16. If the whole world lived like the average person in the UAE, we would use up the planet’s yearly resources by mid-March. The UAE has one of the highest ecological footprints per person in the world.
What can we do to move the date?
We can still turn things around. Moving Overshoot Day later each year means giving nature more time to recover. And we all have a role to play.
Here’s how we can make a real difference:
🌱 Eat smart – Choose more plant-based meals and reduce food waste. Even small changes in your diet can have a big impact.
⚡ Use clean energy – Switch to solar where possible and turn off what you don’t need. Saving energy also saves money.
♻️ Reuse more – Say yes to reusables and no to single-use items. Every refillable bottle, bag or box counts.
🌳 Support nature – Plant trees, protect green spaces or support eco projects. A healthy planet needs thriving ecosystems.
🗳️ Be a voice for change – Support policies and leaders that put the environment first. Use your vote, your voice and your influence.
Earth Overshoot Day is a reminder that we only have one planet. Let’s protect it by living within its limits and inspiring others to do the same.
Together, we can #MoveTheDate.
