Recycling Dos and Don’ts: Common Mistakes to Avoid

2 Mins read

Recycling is a cornerstone of a sustainable lifestyle, but navigating the ever-changing rules and guidelines can be tricky. Fear not, eco-warriors! This  post will equip you with the knowledge to become a recycling champion,  avoiding common mistakes that could send your recyclables straight to the landfill.

Recycling Do’s:

1. Keep Separate Containers: Start by organizing your recycling process at home. Keep separate containers for dry and wet waste in the kitchen. This division makes it easier to sort and dispose of recyclables appropriately.

2. Sort Dry Waste: To streamline the recycling process further, designate two bags for dry waste collection: one for paper and another for plastic. Encourage household members to deposit recyclable items like newspapers, magazines, cardboard, and plastic packaging into their respective bags.
There have been numerous local initiatives aimed at waste management in the UAE. One notable example is the ‘My City My Environment’ initiative introduced by the Dubai Municipality. This initiative has seen the installation of recycling stations at various locations across the city.

3. Ensure Clean and Dry Plastic: Proper preparation of plastic waste is key to its recyclability. Before discarding plastic items, ensure they are clean and dry. Rinse plastic containers free of any food residue to prevent contamination during the recycling process.

4. Manage Wet Waste Promptly: Wet waste, such as food scraps and organic matter, should be disposed of promptly to prevent odors and pests. Make it a habit to send wet waste out of your home daily, either by composting or through designated waste collection services.

5. Schedule Dry Waste Disposal: Unlike wet waste, dry waste can be stored for longer periods. Plan to send dry waste out of your home once a week to avoid clutter and maintain cleanliness. Coordinate with local recycling centers or waste management services for efficient disposal.

Opt for services from platforms like RECAPP, which offers innovative recycling solutions for both individuals and businesses, empowering you to play a pivotal role in reducing waste generation in the UAE and minimizing your carbon footprint. 6. Dispose of Sanitary Waste Responsibly: Pay special attention to the disposal of sanitary waste. Keep a designated paper bag for sanitary waste disposal to ensure proper containment and hygiene. Dispose of the bag in accordance with local regulations or guidelines.

Recycling Don’ts:

1. Don’t Contaminate Recyclables: Avoid contaminating recyclable materials with food residue, liquids, or non-recyclable items. Contamination can compromise the quality of recyclables and may result in rejection during the recycling process.

2. Don’t Dispose of Hazardous Materials in Recycling Bins: Hazardous materials such as batteries, electronics, chemicals, and medical waste should never be disposed of in recycling bins. These items require specialized handling and disposal methods to prevent environmental harm and ensure safety.

3. Don’t Bag Recyclables: Avoid placing recyclables in plastic bags, as they can interfere with the sorting process at recycling facilities. Instead, deposit recyclable items directly into designated recycling bins or containers.

4. Don’t Overfill Recycling Bins: Refrain from overfilling recycling bins beyond their capacity. Overfilled bins can lead to spillage, littering, and difficulty in handling during collection. Ensure that recyclables are placed neatly and securely inside bins to facilitate efficient recycling operations.

6. Don’t Wishcycle: Resist the temptation to wishcycle by placing questionable items in recycling bins with the hope that they will be recycled. Wishcycling can contaminate recyclables and disrupt the recycling process, ultimately leading to increased waste and decreased recycling efficiency.

7. Don’t Ignore Local Recycling Guidelines: Familiarize yourself with local recycling guidelines and regulations to ensure compliance with accepted recycling practices. Ignoring or disregarding local recycling guidelines can lead to improper waste disposal and hinder recycling efforts.

By following these simple dos and don’ts, you can become a recycling pro and contribute to a more sustainable future. Remember, a little knowledge goes a long way!
