From One Hour to 365 Days: How to Make Earth Hour a Year Round Commitment

3 Mins read

Every year, millions around the world switch off their lights for Earth Hour, a symbolic gesture of unity in the fight against climate change. It all began on Saturday, 31 March 2007. The world’s first Earth Hour in Sydney, Australia, saw more than 2.2 million people turn off their lights for one hour to show a climate-skeptic government that people were concerned about climate change.

Since then, Earth Hour has grown into a global movement. Earth Hour 2024 marked the Biggest Hour for Earth yet, with supporters from more than 180 countries and territories collectively contributing over 1.4 million hours through the ‘Hour Bank.’ But what if this act of solidarity wasn’t just for an hour? What if we took the spirit of Earth Hour and wove it into our daily lives, creating lasting change for the planet?

The good news is, we can. Sustainability isn’t about grand gestures – it’s about small, meaningful choices that add up over time. Whether as individuals or businesses, we have the power to extend Earth Hour beyond a single evening and turn it into a year-round commitment. Here’s how:

Small Daily Habits That Make a Big Difference

Sustainability starts with the little things. When repeated daily, even the smallest actions can have a profound impact. Here are simple but effective ways to incorporate sustainability into your routine:

1 1
  • Rethink Consumption: Choose quality over quantity. Opt for reusable, durable items and recycle properly to keep waste out of landfills.
  • Save Energy: Turn off lights and unplug electronics when not in use. Upgrade to energy-efficient appliances and consider installing solar panels if possible.
  • Use Water Wisely: Take shorter showers, fix leaks, and water plants during cooler parts of the day to conserve water. Did you know? Leaks and inefficient use mean that globally about 30% of water is wasted – the equivalent of around 9.5 trillion litres. That’s enough water to fill somewhere in the region of 64 billion bathtubs.
  • Make Smarter Transport Choices: Walk, bike, or use public transport whenever possible. If driving is necessary, try carpooling or switching to a fuel-efficient vehicle.
  • Support Sustainable Products: Look for ethically made goods with minimal packaging. Certifications like Fair Trade and FSC indicate responsible sourcing.
  • Eat Mindfully: Opt for seasonal and locally grown produce. Reducing meat consumption, even occasionally, can significantly lower your carbon footprint. Did you know? Switching from beef to chicken can significantly reduce your carbon footprint, as chicken produces about 10 times fewer emissions than beef.

But sustainability isn’t just an individual effort—businesses have an equally important role to play. Organizations can amplify impact by embedding these principles into their operations and workplace culture.

Bringing Earth Hour into the Workplace

Businesses play a crucial role in shaping a sustainable future. By integrating Earth Hour principles into corporate responsibility, companies can drive meaningful impact. Here’s how:

2
  • Cut Energy Waste: Conduct energy audits, upgrade to efficient lighting, and encourage employees to power down devices when not in use.
  • Reduce and Recycle: Implement recycling programs, minimize packaging waste, and replace disposable office supplies with sustainable alternatives.
  • Source Responsibly: Partner with eco-conscious suppliers and prioritize sustainable materials.
  • Switch to Renewable Energy: Explore solar or wind power options for your operations. Learn more about Why Going Green is Good for Your Bottom Line.
  • Empower Employees: Offer sustainability training, encourage eco-friendly commuting, and recognize green initiatives within the team.
  • Be Transparent: Set measurable sustainability goals and share progress publicly to hold your company accountable.

Monthly Earth Hour Challenge
Dedicate one hour each month to an Earth Hour-inspired activity, such as unplugging from non-essential technology, conducting awareness workshops for energy saving, or organizing a local clean-up drive. Did you know? In 2022, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) recorded energy savings of 329 megawatts (MW) in Dubai’s electricity consumption during Earth Hour.  The savings in electricity consumption were equivalent to a reduction of 132 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Take on a Challenge for a Greater Impact

Beyond daily habits and workplace initiatives, taking on sustainability challenges can help push personal and collective efforts further:

  • Plastic Free Challenge: Try reducing or eliminating single-use plastics for a set period.
  • Carbon Footprint Challenge: Measure and track your emissions, then commit to cutting them through smarter energy use and greener transport choices.
  • Food Waste Challenge: Plan meals, store food properly, and compost scraps to minimize waste.
  • Nature Connection Challenge: Spend more time outdoors—whether hiking, gardening, or simply appreciating the environment around you.
  • Advocacy Challenge: Use your voice to support sustainable policies and initiatives in your community and beyond.

A Year-Round Commitment to the Planet

Earth Hour is more than just turning off the lights—it’s a reminder that collective action can drive real change. By integrating sustainability into our daily lives, workplaces, and broader communities, we can turn one symbolic hour into a lifelong habit.

Every action, no matter how small, contributes to a more sustainable future. So let’s not wait for next year’s Earth Hour—let’s start today.
